Keeping your neck cool is an effective way to keep you cool.That's why folks working in the sun often wear a wet bandanna around the neck.Unfortunately, in these pandemic times, wearing a lightweight gaiter mask during the summer is incompatible with wearing a wet bandanna.Enter this cool cooling device.But first, some history. Many years ago, Sharper Image introduced a similar cooling gadget you wore around your neck, but that one worked like a swamp cooler.You put water into the sponges contained in the two arms, and a little fan blew air through the water, helping you keep cool via convection.A year or two later, Sharper Image introduced a more advanced neck cooler, this one using a thermoelectric cooling/heating surface along the inside of the neck band. Because thermoelectric cooling and heating use more power than a fan, the device was tethered to a battery pack holding two C batteries, which you wore on your belt.Back to the present. When I first saw the product description for this neck cooler, I wasn't sure if they were indeed touting the inclusion of a thermoelectric cooling surface.They were, and it works great!That's right, folks, this device offers two means of cooling: twin fans blowing air at your face or neck up front, PLUS the cooling surface -- that really gets cold -- at the back of your neck.You can use just the fans at one of three speeds with or without the cooling surface. Needless to say, the cooling surface is the star of the show, so I can't imagine opting not to use it!The good news in this design is there's no separate battery pack. Instead, the unit contains a rechargeable battery that charges via USB. Supposedly, the device will run at the maximum fan speed with the cooler on for up to three hours.The only negative I've encountered is the sound of the fans -- you'll hear a distinct whirring noise, especially at top speed. (As I recall, the Sharper Image cooler made the same noise.) Fortunately, the sound isn't as loud at the lower speeds, so on cooler days, you may opt to use those.I could also do without the mini light show when I'm wearing the thing. That's two LEDs in one of the arms that light up blue (with one of them flashing) when the unit is operating (one of the LEDs also blinks red when the unit is charging).But otherwise the unit definitely works as advertised, and the arms flex narrower and wider and twist up or down to fit your neck and direct the air flow from the two front fans to your face or neck as desired.At first I thought my unit wasn't working, though it had charged properly. It turns out you have to hold the ON/OFF/Fan Speed switch for three seconds to activate or deactivate the unit. You can then tap the same button to change fan speeds and tap the other button to turn the cooler on or off.The device is solid and appears to be well made. I hope to get several summers of use from it before the battery inevitably stops taking a charge.Until then -- two (cool) thumbs up.
